This
painting is sized 28" x 42" so is quite large
for what I usually paint. The originating idea stems
from what could be called Tiki art from the 1950's which
was (in my opinion) a westernized fantasy art based
on what society was like in various pacific islands
in the past. The whole idea of that art seems to be
more of a cliche and misguided tourist concept than
a reality of any culture.
I
just started with that basic idea but invented by own
little culture of people inhabiting this land. This
land scape is actually more of a psychological dreamscape
than a representation of a real world. There is a lot
of symbolism much of which represents the differences
between dualism and freedom from being 'trapped' within
dualism (could be called nirvana, moshka, cosmic consciousness,
Christ consciousness, etc).
A
major idea visible in the full photo is the idea of
the chakras or apparent energy centres of the body.
This is represented by the line of symbols running from
the water scorpion, through the snake handler (Ophiuchus
or the Greek's Asclepius - the healer), through the
boat (travelling towards the island - the boat could
be the Argo of the Greek's Jason voyaging to acquire
the Golden Fleece - Heracles would be one of the crew),
onto the island with temple and small door topped by
the pine tree which I mean to represent the pineal gland
within the brain. This small gland named pineal after
a similarity to the pine cone is seen by many (although
apparently not many scientists) as the causation
of mystical experience and shown as the third eye and
even the cobra on the forehead of ancient Egyptian images.
It is also interesting that even the Vatican has a large
prominent statue of a pine cone in the Court of the
Pinecone. Today, Papal staves have pinecone motiffs
and much older Greek cervings show similar pinecone
motiffs. It makes me wonder if this symbol represents
a similar thing within various religions over a span
of millenia - although I have no definite proof yet
suggesting this is true or false.
The
pineal gland appears (according to some research but
not supported by all people) to produce the substance
DMT
(dimethyltryptamine) which some research suggests is
the cause of spontaneous "mystical experience"
(often induced during great stress or injury and in
near-death experiences) or the eventual experience
of nirvana (or other term) within various Asian
meditative philosophies (although this activation can
be a biproduct of practices within western religion).
Strangely enough, DMT is labelled a "schedule 1"
drug by most nations which is a bit of a perdicament
since we all are producing it within our own brains!
The
philosopher Rene Descartes considered the pineal gland
of great importance and called it the "seat of
the soul". Other symbolist research by John
Anthony West
into ancient Egypt suggest they also considered
it of prime importance (although this is not supported
by official Egyptology - although some argue that official
Egyptology is repressivly behind the times)
The
ten close-up photos have more text description revealing
much of the symbolism of the painting.
